Top 10 places to visit along the Pacific Oceans Ring of Fire

November 30, 2009 by admin

the way I interpreted this topic might be different from what was expected.

The Pacific ocean’s "Ring Of Fire" refers to the horseshoe shaped string of volcanoes stretching from the bottom of Zew Zealand, along Asia , up around Alaska, then downward along the coast of Canada, the California coast, and down the coast of Mexico, Central America, and South America to the southern tip of Patagonia.

The ten top tourist attractions I chose are

The great barrier reef

Singapore

Bangkok Thailand

Hong Kong China

Tokyo Japan

The Aleutian islands of Alaska

San Francisco CA

Acapulco Mexico

The Panama canal

Lima Peru

I selected these locations because they would enable me to travel the entire length of the horseshoe curve of the ring of fire.

Shopping Throughout Asia: Find Hidden Treasures Among The World’s Finest Clothing And Jewelry

In between climbing pagodas and snapping pictures of golden goddesses, most travelers to Asia take time to visit the shopping districts. The quality and selection of designer clothing and extravagant items found in shops across Asia will not disappoint those with a penchant for luxury goods. From China to India, great buys are available for those who know what to look for.

Mainland China is a fantastic place to find extravagant jewelry at discount prices. Jewelry markets are filled with glittering gems and beautiful jade pieces abound. Exquisite strands of high quality, lustrous pearls are easy to find in China. When purchasing jewelry in mainland China, feel free to bargain. It’s the way business is done in China, and most owners of small shops expect it.

There have been cases of shopkeepers taking advantage of tourists, and the best defense is knowledge. If buying pearls, test them against your teeth for roughness. You might want to test both a real pearl and faux pearl in advance to make sure you can recognize the difference. For gems, consider purchasing a jeweler’s loupe and learning to use it. Be especially careful when buying jade, since it can be difficult to tell true jade from false.

Silk is also a good buy in China. Stores that sell lengths of fabric and silk garments are abundant, and some shops will make a shirt or dress from the silk fabric of your choosing.

Because there is no sales tax in Hong Kong and imported goods are not taxed, designer clothing can be purchased there for excellent prices. Bargains can be found on cameras and electronics, but make sure you know the going prices for these items so you’ll be able to spot a good deal. Hong Kong is also an excellent place to buy watches and jewelry.

Thailand is another great source for jewelry. Unfortunately, dishonest jewelry dealers are plentiful. Never follow any “helpful” individual who offers to lead you to a jewelry store with incredible bargains – it’s probably a scam. To avoid being cheated it’s best to deal with a respectable jewelry firm, preferably one that is a member of the Jewel Fest Club. The Tourism Authority of Thailand founded this reputable organization, and member stores are listed in a booklet and display the Jewel Fest Club logo.

In India you can find many items made from the amazing textiles created in the country. Clothing, tablecloths, towels and other household goods are good buys here.

Jewelry is also a good buy in India, but again, beware of fakes and frauds.

Geography and your Children’s Health: a Worthy National Topic of Debate

November 29, 2009 by admin

It may seem odd at first; to phantom that the very natural resources that we need to live, work and play, are also associated with an Array of health problems. The truth is a hard one to swallow. So, don’t be surprised that you haven’t heard the following information blasted on local news! However, this crucial information affects our children’s health at epidemic rates.

Amazingly there are 25 million children who live in areas that violate national air quality standards for ozone, particulate matter from coal fired plants and sulfur dioxide. Another 35 million children live very close to power plants and 2 million kids are asthmatic…which is linked to airborne pollutants. A recent health study from the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that air pollution levels in major U.S. cities pose a health risk comparable to second hand smoke. Does this mean that it is just as bad to go outside in the fresh air, as it is to eat in the “non-smoking” side of your local restaurant? Well, you be the judge, however, in some States or Countries… it is better to be in a smoke filled restaurant.

There are so many health hazards, (fossil fuels, VOC’s, smog, etc.) it‘s difficult to begin a discussion without sounding overly negative and pessimistic. So, I would like to leave this “personal disclaimer” before, stating the following information. “The U.S. Government, along with other countries, is making valiant efforts to minimize our ongoing threat of potentially devastating health and life consequences, emitting from our current energy sources.”

But…Clinical trials prove air pollution; including SMOG has devastating effects on our children’s health! The best research we have at the time was researched by USC in 2004, called “A Children’s Health Study”. The study showed that long term exposure to air pollution has long term effects on children’s lungs. This “should be” a National platform for Environmental Change. Yes, Global Warming is factually warming the earth…which has been occurring for 100’s of years. The long term effects of global warming may include, health issues, derived from Extreme Weather Conditions. But, again, our children’s health is currently deteriorating, due to current ozone related issues.

Research has shown that kids who live in certain geographic areas of California, experience a 10%-15% decrease in lung functionality, than kids who were raised in other parts of the country. Further research shows that kids are far more likely to experience Lung damage as an adult from living and growing up in areas where high levels of smog have been measured.

In 2004, The Journal of the American Medical Association linked higher death rates caused by smog or often called ‘ground ozone”.

Smog has the following effect on our children:

• Damaged cells in the lung’s airways, causing inflation and swelling of the lungs.

• Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Sneezing, wheezing and other neurological problems.

• Decreased breathing capacity (cough and chest pain)

• Decrements of lung functioning (reduced ability to take a breath)

• Changes in lung structure with possible increases in lung disease.

Further evidence shown by the University of Southern California, show for the first time that ozone may actually cause asthma. In 12 California communities 3500 children were studied with no history of asthma. The results showed that children who played in areas where there were high ozone levels were 3 times more likely to develop asthma. There was no increased risk for asthma development in areas of low ozone concentration.

• California reports approximately 9,000 deaths annually from complications from air pollution.

• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recent National-Scale Air Toxics Assessment reported that one in every 15,000 Californians — about 66 per million — is at risk of contracting cancer from breathing chemicals in the air over his or her lifetime.

• In New York, researchers estimated that the annual death toll is approximately 319 annually in New York City.

• 23 European cities, found that death from respiratory disease was more strongly associated with ozone exposure that was with cardiovascular rates.

• India (57K), Indonesia (15K), China (16K) Russian Federation(19K) people die of asthma annually.

• The health impact of air pollution in Italian cities is large: 8220 deaths a year.

• When Hong Kong made regulations to reduce sulphur emissions, each Hong Kong resident gained extra weeks of living for every year of breathing dirty air.

Interesting Fact: The Great London Fog In 1952, was responsible for killing over 12,000 people. According to London papers, London was known for Fog, so know one really noticed that they were running out of caskets and flowers until it had been nearly a week. Note: the fog lasted only 5 days!

Geography does dictate and has always dictated healthy outside air quality issues. If you live in certain areas of our country or outside the U.S. your children are more likely to have health issues derived from air pollutants. California is at the head of the list, and has made progress in reducing ozone pollution in half, since 1980, but continue to have the worst air quality in the nation.

If air quality is reducing the future of our young; is it not worth a national debate? Never before have we seen corporate America change their corporate vision to a Green future, as we do now. Are we trading in one current geographical and ozone related disaster for the newest disaster discovery? If you want to get support from the masses of the people, tell them the truth about our current health challenges. Tell them that the one thing they value the most, their children, are being harmed by the current ozone related pollution and particular matter. Tell them that Nine cities, home to 57 million people, are considered “severely” polluted, experiencing peak ozone levels that exceed the standards… by 50% or more. Most importantly, tell them that this is not new-news and why being “Green” means so much now? If money and power were not what drives our national debates, do you think that our children’s health would be the premise for environmental corporate change? What happened to putting our children first?

Causeway Bay offers shopping with a difference

Causeway Bay is a heavily built up area on Hong Kong Island and was one of the first areas in Hong Kong to have high rise buildings such as the World Trade Centre and several other sky scrapers that were constructed in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Now the area is famous as a trendy shopping district and features a variety of shops, also the commercial property rent in causeway bay is among the highest in the world further emphasizing its popularity.

To the north of Causeway Bay lie the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter. Plunging beneath the harbor between them is Hong Kong Island’s entrance to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, now one of four tunnels between the Island and Kowloon with the recent addition of the Western Harbour Tunnel.

At the center of the area is a busy shopping district that is found in Little Japan, Jardine’s Bazaar, and Times Square. The different shopping areas in Causeway Bay offer you different types of stores. Little Japan is a popular area that has outlets of major Japanese department stores. Jardine’s Bazaar has a distinct Chinese feel to it with shops selling Soya sauce, the famous Chinese delicacy 100 year-old eggs and Pennington Street has Chinese Medical Halls and pawn shops. By contrast Times Square is home to a twelve-story shopping arcade with over 200 shops, restaurants, and a Cineplex and topped off by two office towers. Just outside the myriad of shops, is the city’s centre of entertainment Times Square Plaza inspired by Times Square in New York. Here you will find the city’s largest Sony Jumbotron, the site of New Year’s celebrations and the most popular meeting spot in Hong Kong.

At the furthest southernmost end, before the island rises dramatically towards Victoria Peak, is the horse-racing track at Happy Valley which is one of the oldest racing tracks in Hong Kong.

Located in the busy, chic shopping districts of Causeway Bay is Cosmo Hotel. This is a very hip hotel in Hong Kong that is quite modern and keeps with the trendy and modern feel of Causeway Bay.

Assessing the importance of learning foreign languages

November 29, 2009 by admin

If you are reading this, then the two of us have at least one commonality the ability to communicate using the English language. Whether we have been so fortunate as to have learned it as a native tongue, or so commendable as to have independently mastered it, we can enjoy the benefits of membership in a global community that largely recognizes English as the international language for business, entertainment, and hospitality.

Rooted in the heyday of the British Empire and its colonization strategies, which ensured the transplant of English to such far-flung destinations as Australia, Hong Kong, India, South Africa, and North America, the domination of the English language for international communications was further entrenched by the 20th century business interests of two of the wealthiest nations of the time, the United Kingdom and the United States. If there is any doubt as to the reach of English around our world, consider the booming market for instructors teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) throughout Asia, Europe, South America, as well as the significant numbers of international graduate students seeking higher degrees in Australia, Canada, the US, and the UK.

Certainly, for many around the globe, the importance of learning English as a second, if not third or fourth, language is justifiably perceived to be critical to professional success. Conversely, native English speakers often suffer a sense of complacency about the value of additional language skills.

In the short term, this narrow perspective is detrimental. Intellectually beneficial, learning a new language engages the brain in unique and valuable ways, encouraging intelligence by forcing neurons to create new pathways. Socially, undertaking the challenge of another language acknowledges the reality that ours is a global community in which no nation is justified to presume cultural or linguistic superiority.

Despite the current dominance of English language, the technological revolution has transformed the world such that nation states rely on one another for integral goods and services, giving new meaning to the World Wide Web. Not only are we connected in real time via the Internet, but also are bound by increasingly complex financial and consumer markets. Clear communication is critical to maintaining functional systems; this is not achieved simply by using the correct words, but in understanding on a cultural level the other parties to the dialogue. Language operates as much more than a mechanical tool of expression; it provides insight into the character, quirks, and heart of a country. Acquisition of a new language opens for the speaker a more profound understanding not only of another culture and its individuals, but also provides a lens through which to understand the biases and assumptions of one’s own culture.

In the long term, ignoring the necessity of learning a second language is unsustainable. The era of the English club is waning. In combination, native Mandarin Chinese and Spanish speakers are three times more populous than native English speakers. China’s economy is skyrocketing, South America is gaining stability, and the power of the once dominant US economy is petering out in the world marketplace. The second language of choice may be changing, but the reasons to become bilingual are only growing more compelling. Chinese, anyone?

“Chan and Li Team Up For the First Time in Fun Martial Arts Fantasy”

In the history of cinema, audiences have bared witness to epic battles: King Kong vs. Godzilla; Frankenstein vs. the Wolf Man; Alien vs. Predator; Freddy vs. Jason; Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris; Al Pacino vs. Robert De Niro. Even today, fans seem to be clamoring for their favorite character/actor to meet/fight the other in a cross-over. Add the latest battle to the list: the first on-screen fight/team-up of two Hong Kong/American cross-over superstars: Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

“The Forbidden Kingdom,” the film in which these two star is many things. Basically you can combine elements from “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Back to the Future,” “Last Action Hero,” “Star Wars,” “The Karate Kid” and just about every Hong Kong martial arts epic ever made. Normally, taking elements from other films screams unoriginality , but then again, “Kingdom” only borrows the themes and ideas . . . not the plot points all together and its story is original enough on its own. Most importantly, this martial arts fantasy adventure has the one element guaranteed to make a film with such an outlandish premise work: it is fun. Silly and full of nonsense, but very fun.

A modern-day teenager named Jason Triptikas (Michael Angarano) spends his free time worshiping every martial arts film in existence and hangs out at antique shop in Boston’s Chinatown. When he has an unfortunate run-in with a gang robbing the place, circumstances force him to protect a mysterious staff being held in the back room. Suddenly, the staff magically whisks him out of his world and into ancient China, where he is immediately targeted for death by soldiers.

Jason is rescued by an apparent beggar named Lu Yan (Chan) who is secretly a master of drunken kung fu. He informs Jason that the staff is a magic weapon owned by a powerful warrior named the Monkey King (Li). The Monkey King was an unbeatable thorn in the side of the Jade Dynasty, so the Jade Emperor sought to give him a title and make peace with him, before he left on his 500-year journey of solace (oh, by the way, the Monkey King and the Royal Family are all immortals due to drinking from the elixir of life: wine). But the emperor’s warlord (Collin Chou) decided to trick the Monkey King into giving up his staff. The Monkey King is imprisoned in stone, while the staff flies throughout space and time, looking for a seeker that will return the staff to its

Great places for exploration and adventure travel

On our trip to Australia two years ago, we made a stop-over of three days in Hong Kong. This truly was an amazing experience and one that I will never forget. It was a first introduction to Asia in general and more specifically to China. Hong Kong is a sweltering place where the humidity reaches high levels. Yet it is very clean and orderly and the general feeling is one of safety. It was a culinary adventure in that we decided to frequent some of the more out of the way non-tourist bars, cafes and restaurants. My wife and I both love good food and we certainly had our fix in Hong Kong. Of course we did some sightseeing as well. We took the Star ferry to Hong Kong Island, visited the Temple Street market and the Ladies market. We also spent some time in the futuristic Langham Place; an astounding luxurious shopping mall containing the longest escalator I have ever seen.

The people in Hong Kong are friendly and courteous and funnily enough find it interesting to be confronted by Westerners. There was quite some giggling going on at times at the sight of these two exotic Europeans. Hong Kong is a wonderful and impressive place to visit and one that I would recommend to anyone who is curious to find out more about other cultures.

Beijing 2008 – Part 1

November 29, 2009 by admin

Beijing, located in northern China, is the second largest city in China, next to Shanghai, and the capital of the People’s Republic of China. Beijing is a major hub for transportation, which makes it even more important in the overall economics of the country. It is also the point to which many international flights arrive and depart. Beijing is considered the political, cultural, and educational centre of China. Beijing, as one of the four great ancient capitals of China, will have an important place in history again when it hosts the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Getting To Beijing 2008

Going to Beijing 2008 is something that will take a lot of planning. If you are arriving in Beijing for the Summer Olympic Games, it is advised to make reservations as soon as possible. If you are simply traveling to Beijing for business or for pleasure, it is much easier to arrange. Most international flights to China will arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport. In fact, flights to Shanghai, China, often arrive first in Beijing, and flights from London to Hong Kong are often routed through the Beijing Airport. When taking China holidays for whatever reason, flying into Beijing is often the best bet. Flights from the UK to Beijing arrive at least twice a day, and the number of flights will increase as the Summer Olympics Games 2008 approach.

The Beijing airport is located near Shunyi, about 20 km northeast of Beijing. Most of the flights within China, and the majority of the cheap flights, will arrive and depart from the Beijing Capital International Airport, the main hub for Air China.

One can get from the Beijing airport to the city centre by taking the Airport Expressway. This is about a 40-minute drive depending upon the traffic, and another expressway will be completed before the Beijing 2008 Summer Games. There will also be a light rail system that will transport people from the airport to the city centre.

Where To Stay in Beijing 2008

Finding a place to stay in Beijing during normal times is usually quite easy. If a person arrives in Beijing for business or for holiday, there are many hotels from which to choose. This was not always the case, as Beijing had almost no hotels in the early development of China, which was due to social as well as economic conditions. However, the years since have seen a great increase in the number and quality of hotels. There are currently many hotels to choose from in Beijing including Best Western, Hilton, and several other international hotel chains. These hotels cater to business travelers as well as holiday goers. From the airport, one can find transportation directly to these hotels, and other information on the hotels, such as their location, pricing, and room availability, is also available. Shopping and Eating in Beijing 2008

When one is in Beijing for business, finding places to shop and eat might not be at the top of the list of things to do. However, during a down time, or during a holiday, one can find many places within the city centre to do some shopping and dining. The Central Business District, which is centered in the Guomao area, is the best place to find local shopping. This is an area that also has high-end housing, as well as many corporate regional and national headquarters.

Also, in this area, one can find many interesting restaurants in which to eat, where the main crops of the Beijing area are used in the local cuisine. This includes many dishes made with wheat, maize, and vegetables which are grown close to the city in order to supply the city with food.

Sights to See In Beijing 2008

When one is in Beijing for any reason, you might want to take some time to see several local sights. Even a business traveler should take a few hours and see one of the most important tourist attractions in all of China, the main entrance to the Forbidden City. Other interesting sights are the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven.

Beijing 2008 Olympics

Beijing will have another claim to fame when the 2008 Summer Olympic games are held in this city from August 8th, 2008, to August 24th, 2008. Most of the events will be held within Beijing at the Beijing National Stadium; however, some events will be held in other cities in China.

The awarding of the Olympics to Beijing 2008 marked a real turning point in history. The Chinese government sees these games as the chance for the country, as well as for Beijing, to highlight its rise into a World Power. If one hopes to travel to Beijing for these games, it is a good idea to make arrangements for travel well in advance.

Our statistics show that over 95% of them will pass the lab exam after they finish this course. http://www.cathayschool.com/

The materials contain CCIE Service Provider Boot Camp questions, and requirements and solutions, which can be comfortably studied and practiced during the period between your course finishing date and the lab exam date.
